Thomas W. Schmitt
Tom Schmitt is a consultant at Grahall Partners, LLC. He has served as associate vice president for human resources at the California Institute of Technology from January 1997 until his retirement in June 2007. His responsibility for overall human resources management included employment, affirmative action, benefits, compensation, training and development, employee relations and services, human resources systems, payroll operations, faculty and student immigration services, postdoctoral scholars, and animal care services.
At conferences sponsored by the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources, the Association of American Medical Colleges, and the National Association of College and University Business Officers, Mr. Schmitt has delivered papers on topics covering compensation, benefits, and change management. He has also consulted on similar subject areas at other colleges and universities both in the United States and in other countries.
Prior to his Caltech appointment, Mr. Schmitt was at Harvard University for 15 years, serving initially as associate dean at that university’s medical school, and then as the university’s director of total compensation. He is was a member and chair of the San Gabriel Valley United Way Board of Directors, the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources, and the Society of Human Resources Management. Mr. Schmitt is a member and former chair of the TIAA-CREF Advisory Council and he has served as a member of the Fidelity Investments Tax-Exempt Services Company Client Board.
Mr. Schmitt is a graduate of Hamilton College in Clinton, New York and served for five years on active duty in the United States Navy. He also served for six years as a Winchester, Massachusetts selectman and was elected twice to chair that board.
