Alan Nadel is a Consultant with Grahall, LLC. Alan serves as Managing Director of Strategic Apex Group LLC, a management consulting firm focusing on executive compensation and corporate governance with offices in New York, Los Angeles and Denver. For more than 40 years he has served a diverse range of clients on matters relating to executive and board of directors compensation, employee benefits, retirement programs, ESOPs, and income tax and estate planning.
In his current practice, Alan advises clients about the design and implementation of executive and board member compensation programs, including the strategic, financial, funding, accounting and tax considerations, as well as on various aspects of corporate governance. He has represented various companies and senior executives in negotiations concerning employment agreements, severance programs and change-in-control arrangements. Alan also has provided expert testimony in both civil and criminal matters. Clients include public and private companies, domestic and international corporations, and not-for-profit organizations.
Over the course of his career, Alan has been associated with various consulting and accounting firms. Currently he is a Managing Director at Strategic Apex Group LLC, a compensation consulting firm he established in 2004 and, until recently, also served as a Principal at Buck Consultants. He previously was a partner at Ernst & Young following a 19-year career at Arthur Andersen, where he established and served as Managing Partner of Andersen’s Compensation and Benefits practice. Previously he worked at Price Waterhouse after beginning his career at the Internal Revenue Service. Alan is both a Certified Public Accountant and a Chartered Global Management Accountant, and holds an MBA in Taxation (City University of New York), APC (MS) in Actuarial Science (New York University) and BS in Mathematics (John Carroll University).
Alan is a coauthor of Accounting for Equity Compensation (1st and 2nd editions) and Equity Compensation for Limited Liability Companies. He is a contributing author of The Employee Benefits Handbook, the Compensation Committee Handbook, The Stock Options Book and Executive Compensation in ESOP Companies. Alan has lectured at the Columbia University Graduate School of Business, New York University School of Law (LLM program), Yale University Law School, UCLA School of Management and the City University of New York (MBA program). He developed and led in-house training for a number of companies including AT&T, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Merrill Lynch, Neuberger Berman, Daiwa, Salomon Brothers, Pitney Bowes and Estee Lauder Company. Alan has served as an expert advisor on ESOPs to the Financial Accounting Standards Board and testified before the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Education and Labor. He is a frequent speaker for professional and industry groups worldwide, has been quoted in various business publications and newspapers, and has appeared on a number of nationally-televised business programs.
Alan’s board memberships have included the American Benefits Council, Certified Equity Professional Institute, National Association of Stock Plan Professionals, American Pension Conference, Employee Benefits Institute and New York Employee Benefits Group. His editorial board affiliations include the Compensation Planning Journal (Bloomberg BNA), Journal of Retirement Planning (CCH) and Journal of Compensation and Benefits (Thomson Reuters).
